HONG KONG — Monsters University continued to dominate the Hong Kong box office this weekend after a strong opening day, setting a new record for the highest opening weekend gross for an animated feature in the territory.
The Pixar prequel to the 2001 Monsters, Inc. raked in $3.34 million (HK$25.79 million) during its opening weekend from Thursday to Sunday, surpassing the $3.31 million (HK$25.7 million) record of fellow Pixar film Toy Story 3 in 2010, according to the Hong Kong Theatre Association and Hong Kong Box Office Ltd.

Monsters University also climbed Hong Kong’s top 10 all-time opening weekend list, landing at fifth place, behind Iron Man 3 (2013), The Avengers (2012), Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), and Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows Part 2 (2011).
On Sunday, it broke the single-day box office record for an animated feature, grossing $1.02 million (HK$7.93 million), ahead of Toy Story 3’s HK$7.87 million prior record.
The film’s Hong Kong distributor, the Walt Disney Co., (Asia-Pacific), is organizing a free charity screening on July 27 for parents and their offspring in a selected community in Hong Kong to “repay the society for its support,” according to a Disney release.
