LACCO AMENO, Ischia — Claudia Cardinale, the Italian actress and international pinup girl who was a mainstay of Italian films in the 1960s and 1970s, will be the guest host of the Venice Film Festival’s Venezia Classici section devoted to restored films and documentaries.
The section (the name means “Venice Classics”), launched last year under first-year artistic director Alberto Barbera, will also screen Vaghe stelle dell’Orsa (Sandra), Luchino Visconti’s retelling of the Electra story from Greek mythology, with Cardinale in the starring role. It will be a return for Cardinale to the Venice Lido, where she was discovered in 1957 after winning a trip to the festival as a prize for winning a beauty contest.

Vaghe stelle dell’Orsa, which won Venice’s prestigious Golden Lion prize as the festival’s best film, is one of the restored films that will screen in the section.
William Friedkin’s 1977 classic Sorcerer will open the section. The festival announced previously that Friedkin will be given the festival’s lifetime achievement prize.
And Francesco Rosi’s classic political corruption drama, Le mani sulla citta (Hands Over the City), previously announced as Venice’s pre-opening film, will also screen in the section.
