NEW YORK – Cate Blanchett will return to the New York stage this summer when the Sydney Theatre Company production of Jean Genet’s The Maids plays as part of the 2014 Lincoln Center Festival.
An Oscar frontrunner this year for her role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, Blanchett stars opposite French stage and screen veteran Isabelle Huppert and rising Australian star Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) in a new English translation of the play by Andrew Upton and director Benedict Andrews.

First performed in 1947, Genet’s three-character play follows the sadomasochistic rituals of two sibling domestics (Blanchett and Huppert), who repeatedly switch roles in a power game built around the fantasy of murdering their employer (Debicki).
The production originated last year at Sydney Theatre Company, where Blanchett’s husband Upton continues to serve as artistic director since the end of the couple’s joint tenure in that role.
Running Aug. 6-16 at New York City Center, the play marks Blanchett’s fourth visit to the city in an STC production.
It follows Hedda Gabler (2006) and A Streetcar Named Desire (2009), both of which played the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theater, and Uncle Vanya, seen to great acclaim in the 2012 Lincoln Center Festival.
