This week, 13-month-old Aria Schilling took her very first steps.

It was also to be Aria’s third week in recovery from a life-saving surgery to correct the toddler`s congenital heart disorder – a surgery that was abruptly cancelled just days before the procedure.

But Tuesday, the family got some very good news.

“They, in fact, are overturning Western Health Advantage’s decision,” said Bridgette Schilling, Aria’s mom.

Parents Bridgett and Johan Schilling appealed the insurer’s decision to hold the surgery in-network at the UC Davis Medical Center.

Tuesday, an independent medical review doctor ruled in favor of the Schillings, allowing them to move forward with their surgeon at Oakland’s Childrens Hospital.

“We should be coming home … out of the hospital with her heart repairedaAnd moving on to the next phase,” Johan said.

The fight has been difficult for everyone in the family. Perhaps even harder for Aria’s older sisters.

“Now that it hasn’t been happening, it’s hard to see. We’re just hoping for the best for her,” said Donovyn Schilling.

The insurance company would not comment on the decision because they said they haven’t yet received official word.
