LONDON — U.K.’s Channel 4 has acquired NBCUniversal-produced Fox cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, starring Andy Samberg.
The series about a group of detectives had strong ratings in its Tuesday night debut in the U.S. Channel 4 said it will air on its E4 network starting in January.
Financial details weren’t disclosed.
“I’m delighted to bring NBCUniversal’s laugh-out-loud comedy about a motley crew of cops to the U.K.,” said Jay Hunt, chief creative officer at Channel 4. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine will be a real treat for E4 audiences when it launches here in the new year.”
Channel 4 recently also acquired another big U.S. show that debuts this fall — Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.
E4 is an entertainment channel targeting 15- to 35-year-olds with such programs as The Cleveland Show, The O.C., Smallville, Veronica Mars, How I Met Your Mother, 90210, One Tree Hill, Ugly Betty, Scrubs, Rules of Engagement, The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls and Revenge.
Created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur, the duo behind Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine stars Saturday Night Live alum Samberg as a wisecracking detective with the best arrest record on his team. Andre Braugher, Melissa Fumero (Gossip Girl), Terry Crews (Bridesmaids), Joe Lo Truglio (Superbad) and Stephanie Beatriz (The Closer) are also part of the cast.
Said Belinda Menendez, president of NBCUniversal International Television Distribution & Universal Networks International: “We have a longstanding relationship with Channel 4, and partnering with them to bring Brooklyn Nine-Nine to U.K. audiences just seemed like the perfect fit.”
