PLACER COUNTY—

It can give 100 compressions per minute, and signals a paramedic to give two short breaths after each set of 30.

This device that looks like a bridge with a plunger is actually a $15,000 cardiopulmonary resuscitation compression device called Lucas 2.

Paramedics in Rocklin and Roseville say it makes their lives much easier.

It also cuts down on safety issues for responders, making it easier for them to do things, like, buckle up while Lucas 2 is still working on the patient.

This is the future of CPR – and if this patient were you, it would increase your chance of survival in an emergency. In fact, its creators claim, Lucas 2 can increase brain flow by 60 percent over manual CPR.

Lucas 2 is on loan to the Rocklin Fire Department. The device has been used in Europe for the past ten years, and in the US since 2007.

Roseville and Rocklin fire department are the first in Placer County to give Lucas a go.
