HONG KONG – The International Film Festival Rotterdam has announced the first batch of recipient projects for its script development grants for the year.
Nearly three months after the deadline for applications for its spring selection round, the Hubert Bals Fund (HBF) has chosen 11 projects to receive its script development grants. Filmmakers are in line to receive up to 10,000 euros to conduct more research, writing, translation or hiring of coaches or script doctors for their projects.
Five of the projects are helmed by previous HBF winners, including Argentina’s Alejandro Fadel (with his new project Civil Disobedience), Georgia’s Rusudan Pirveli (Sleeping Lessons), Mexico’s Matias Meyer (Yo), Iran’s Majid Barezgar (A Really Ordinary Citizen) and the Philippines’ Shireen Seno (Nervous Translation)
Meanwhile, two winners are making their directorial debuts: Armenia’s Nora Martirosyan (Territoria) and Colombia’s Cesar Acevedo (Land and Shade). The other recipients in the spring 2013 intake include Bikras Ranjan Mishra (Wild Fire, India), Mitra Farahani (Tobeh, Iran), Sheron Dayoc (Women of the Weeping River, the Philippines) and Donald Mugisha (Wasswa, Uganda)
Established in 1989, the HBF’s remit is to facilitate productions from filmmakers from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe, according to the festival’s mission statement. Apart from its script and project development grants, the HDF also provides financial help for post-production, digital production of low-budget features, distribution and training workshops.
Earlier in the week, the festival also announced its spring 2013 winners of the Hubert Bals Fund Plus, which provides Dutch producers financial injection into an international co-production they are partaking. The application deadline for the HBF’s autumn round of selection is August 1.
