7.3 magnitude earthquake reported near Fukushima

      A 7.3 magnitude earthquake has been reported off the coast of Japan.

      The quake struck about 371 kilometres off the east coast of Honshu at a depth of 10 kilometres at 17:10:16 UTC today (October 25), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

      A one-metre tsunami advisory has been issued for five prefectures, including the Fukushima region.

      In 2011, the island was hit with a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami, which destroyed cities, killed over 13,000 people, and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

      A 5.3 magnitude quake struck the island in September 2013; no damage was recorded at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant.

      A tsunami advisory has been issued in five prefectures along Japan's east coast.
