The Berlin Film Festival’s Forum sidebar is staying true to its calling as the most experimental of the Berlinale sections, unveiling a 2014 lineup that includes a raft of first features and avant-garde works from across Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Among the highlights of this year’s Forum are The Second Game, the latest from critically-acclaimed Romanian auteur Corneliu Porumboiu (Police, Adjective, 12:08 East of Bucharest) and The Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq, a crime drama featuring the controversial French writer of Atomized from director Guillaume Nicloux, whose The Nun appeared in Berlin’s competition last year. Another Golden Bear contender from last year, Canada’s Denis Cote (Vic +Flo Saw A Bear), returns with his Joy of Man’s Desiring in the Forum.
American actress and director Josephine Decker manages a unique double feature with both her directorial debut, Butter on the Latch, and her sophomore effort Thou Wast Mild and Lovely, screening in the Forum section.
An idea of the experimental nature of many of the Forum screenings comes from The Guests from U.S. director Ken Jacobs. The feature consists of a 3-D digital enhancement of 1 minute of black and white silent film footage, extended to a 70 minute running length.
The 64th Berlin International Film Festival runs Feb. 6-16.
