Open Road Films has already set a sequel to animated family film The Nut Job, which will hit theaters on Jan. 15, 2016.
The indie distributor is reteaming with Redrover Co., ToonBox Entertainment and Gulfstream Pictures to make the follow-up, The Nut Job 2.
Last weekend, The Nut Job opened to a better-than-expected $25.7 million over the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. The film follows a mischievous squirrel who concocts a plan to rob the town’s biggest nut shop in order to help his friends horde food for the winter.
The voice cast features Will Arnett, Brendan Fraser, Liam Neeson, Katherine Heigl and Maya Rudolph.
Peter Lepeniotis directed Nut Job from a screenplay he co-wrote with Lorne Cameron.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled about The Nut Job,” said Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg. “It has been a pleasure working with the teams at Redrover, ToonBox and Gulfstream and we are delighted to reteam with them.”
