MOSCOW – Eastern Europe’s leading showcase for American independent cinema has awarded cash prizes to Destin Cretton for Short Term 12, a feature about teens in a correctional center, and Emmet Malloy for documentary Big Easy Express, about a bluegrass music festival on board a train traveling to New Orleans.
The respective $10,000 and $5,000 cash prizes were chosen by audience vote at the 4th edition of the American Film Festival in Wroclaw, Poland.
The festival, which wrapped on Oct. 27 after a five day run, screened 80 films at the festival base, the New Horizons cinema, including 52 Polish premieres, three European premieres and a world premiere of California road movie, Blue Highway, by Kyle Smith.
For the second year in a row admissions exceeded 17,000, organizers said on Oct. 29.
Top indie producer Christine Vachon, whose latest film, Kill Your Darlings — starring Daniel Radcliffe as Beat Generation poet Allen Ginsberg — played at the festival, was awarded the Indie Star Award in recognition of her distinguished career.
Vachon, who has long produced films by Todd Haynes, has more than 80 films to her credit.
