The Factions in the House of Representatives

Over the last three weeks, House Republicans engineered a budget fight that led to a government shutdown and threatened a financial default. Efforts to end the standoff were stalled by divisions in the Republican Party, as a core of conservatives faced off against party leaders. As a new round of budget negotiations begins, here is a look at the factions at play in the House and how they voted on the compromise to end the shutdown last week.

A previous version of this interactive feature labeled a group as “Defund Democrats” and incorrectly suggested the Democrats had all voted for defunding or repealing the act. In fact, some members of this group voted for delaying the individual mandate, but not necessarily for defunding or repealing. It also incorrectly stated that Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., had voted at some point to defund or repeal Obamacare. She did not.
