In the first major deal of Berlin’s European Film Market, Sony Pictures Classics have picked up all U.S. and Latin American rights to Berlin competition title Aloft, the English-language debut of director Claudia Llosa (Milk of Sorrow). Sony did the deal with Dreamcatchers, who are handling world sales on the film.
Aloft stars Jennifer Connelly as Nana Kunning, a mother struggling to become both an artist and healer. Cillian Murphy, Mélanie Laurent and William Shimell also star. Laurent plays a young journalist who tracks down Nana’s son Ivan (Murphy), who Nana abandoned 20 years ago. When the two reconnect, it sets in motion events that will change both their lives.
Llosa, originally from Peru, wrote and directed Aloft. Producers include Jose María Morales for Wanda, Ibon Cormenzana on behalf of Arcadia, Phyllis Laing for Buffalo Gal and Jerome Vidal on behalf of Noodles.
The deal was negotiated between Aloft executive producer Mark Johnson, Dreamcatchers‘ Marina Fuentes and SPC.??
“I speak in the name of the whole team of the film when I say that we are ecstatic that the SPC team will distributing this film in U.S. and Latin America. We couldn’t have a better partner to take this film to the public,” said Fuentes.
Llosa’s first film, Milk of Sorrow, won the Golden Bear at the Berlin film festival in 2009 and was nominated for best foreign language film at the 82nd Oscars. The director has been closely connected to Berlin from the start, having taken part in the Berlinale Talent Campus, the festival’s one-week film school for aspiring young talents.
