The sound of a shot fired near the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., prompted all news networks to break into the day’s regularly scheduled programming on Thursday afternoon.
Broadcast networks ABC, NBC and CBS all interrupted daytime programming, as the cable news networks — CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC — immediately went wall-to-wall.
All nets are reporting that the gunfire was the result of a car chase that reached its climax near Capitol Hill, with one police officer being injured in the event. Nets are also reporting that the chase may have been part of an attempted gate crash at the White House. Congress and the White House are both on lockdown as police investigate the scene.
This, of course, comes on the third day of the government shutdown that has prompted widespread criticism of Congress.
Within a half-hour of the story breaking, the broadcast networks resumed previously scheduled programming, while cable news nets continued to cover. Cable news nets have also announced coverage through the evening, with Fox planning an extended edition of Special Report With Bret Baier at 6 p.m.
