Writer-director Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin, Kaboom) has established himself as an explorer of youth culture, willing to confront sexuality, drug use, depression, and any kind of dark cloud that can loom over a teenager’s life. His latest film, White Bird in a Blizzard, teams him with actress Shailene Woodley, who seems to be dominating the young adult genre, with entries in romance (The Spectacular Now), sci-fi/fantasy (Divergent), and weepy drama (2014’s The Fault in Our Stars). The first trailer for White Bird looks to continue their string of successes.
STORY: Sundance Film Festival Unveils 2014 Premieres Lineup
Based on the 1999 novel by Laura Kasischke, White Bird in a Blizzard centers on Katrina Connors (Woodley), who finds herself “becoming sixteen” — physically maturing and blossoming as a sexual individual — as her mother, Eve (Eva Green), slowly cuts herself off from the world. When Eve walks out on her family, Katrina is left to fend for herself, unearthing revelations in an unlikely place: her dreams.
White Bird in a Blizzard was produced by Why Not Productions & Desperate Pictures. Araki will debut the film at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival as part of the non-competition “Premieres” section.
