Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights to writer-director Lucía Puenzo’s The German Doctor, an adaptation of her novel about German SS officer and physician Josef Mengele and the years he spent hiding in South America.
The distributor is planning a spring release for the film, which screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival under its Argentinian title Wakolda.
The film stars Alex Brendemuhl, Florencia Bado, Natalia Oreiro, Diego Peretti, Elena Roger and Guillermo Pfening.
“The story is a haunting and disturbing portrayal of how Mengele likely spent his years in South America,” said Peter Goldwyn, senior vp at Goldywn.
The deal was negotiated by Ian Puente, Goldywn vp and general counsel, and Lucero Garzon and Valentina Merli of Pyramide International on behalf of the filmmaker.
