VANCOUVER – Zeitgeist Films has snapped up the U.S. rights to writer/director Richie Mehta’s Siddharth from Fortissimo Films.
The India-set drama, about a poor Delhi street merchant who travels across India in search of his missing son, bowed in Venice and had its North American premiere in Toronto.
Zeitgeist plans a summer 2014 release for Siddharth, which stars Raijesh Tailang and Tannishtha Chatterjee.
“This film is so much more than a portrayal of an overwhelmed poor family, although that is what they are. This is a multi-dimensional, beautiful and complex work, even funny at times. It has a great script and the acting is spot-on,” Zeitgest Films’ Nancy Gerstman said of the film, which follows Mehta’s earlier India-set film Amal.
Gerstman and Emily Russo of Zeitgeist Films negotiated the deal with Mehta, producer David Miller, Steven Bray and Michael Werner of Fortissimo Films.
Siddharth joins a Zeitgest slate that includes the recent release Marguerite von Trotta’s Hannah Arendt, and the upcoming Child’s Pose, from Peter Calin Netzer, and Dayna Goldfine and Dan Geller’s The Galapagos Affair.
