Gina Carano, an MMA fighter-turned-actress, and comic creator Rob Liefeld are teaming up to bring Liefeld’s creation Avengelyne to the big screen.
Carano and Liefeld will be at Comic-Con on Saturday to meet with fans and sign posters that feature Carano as the character.
First published in 1995 by Liefeld — who co-created X-Force, Cable and Deadpool for Marvel before leaving with several other artists to form Image Comics during the early 1990s — Avengelyne and its subsequent miniseries told of a fallen angel cast to Earth. Her mission is to find and protect “The One,” a person who holds the key to saving mankind from demons and other monsters.
Carano and Liefeld are reconceiving and rebuilding the title into a starring vehicle for Carano, and the movie project is intended to be in the vein of Underworld, the popular vampire-vs.-werewolves franchise starring Kate Beckinsale.

Scott Karp and Brooklyn Weaver (Out of the Furnace) will be packaging and producing the project with Carano and Liefeld.
Avengelyne is among a handful of supernatural female comic book characters who have name recognition, making them ripe for adaptation. On Tuesday, THR reported that visual effects company Rhythm & Hues has optioned Dynamite Entertainment’s Chastity, which tells the story of teenager Chastity Marks, a runaway accused of murdering her abusive father.
A search for a writer or a writer-director to adapt Avengelyne will begin next week.
Carano made her debut in Haywire, an action movie that director Steven Soderbergh fashioned around her after seeing the star kick butt on the mat. Since then, Carano has filmed In the Blood, a thriller directed by John Stockwell, and appeared with Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson in Universal’s hit Fast & Furious 6, which revved up more than $700 million worldwide.
She is repped by Gersh, Syndicate and Ziffren Brittenham.
