Fox Business Network is making moves into alternative programming. The financially focused cable news network announced Wednesday that it’s going into production on its first reality-driven primetime show.
Strange Inheritance, from Towers Productions, is getting a summer 2014 debut. The series will explore what happens to different individuals who came into unconventional inheritances. FBN’s Tracy Byrnes will host.
“A venture like Strange Inheritance helps us diversify our primetime programming,” said FBN executive vp Kevin Magee. “Its eccentric premise is a compelling option for a business audience after hours.”
FBN’s decision to play in the alternative field comes little more than a year after competitor CNBC started doing the same. The latter has had little success with originals, but recently saw a ratings spike with its off-net run of ABC reality competition Shark Tank.
It’s been a few months of big changes over at FBN. The network, now 5 years old, recently scored a talent coup by bringing on financial anchor Maria Bartiromo. Her February addition to the lineup prompted several changes to the schedule.
Strange Inheritance also coincides with a new title for Fox News Channel documentary unit executive producer Brian Gaffney. He will now serve as director of special programming for FBN, managing production of the series.
