LOS ANGELES (AP) — Officials say Terminal 3 at Los Angeles International Airport is open following the shooting of a TSA officer on Friday.
“LAX is expected to return completely to normal operations by the end of today. Vehicular traffic has been normal all day,” the airport said in a statement on Twitter Saturday afternoon.
The 100-foot pylons at LAX will be lit blue this weekend in honor of a transportation security officer who was killed in a shooting.
Authorities say 23-year-old Paul Ciancia strolled into Terminal 3 Friday, pulled a semi-automatic rifle from his duffel bag and started firing at Transportation Security Administration officers.
Gerardo I. Hernandez was fatally shot. He was the first TSA official in the agency’s 12-year history to be killed in the line of duty. Hernandez had been married to Ana Machuca, Warner Bros. manager of worldwide marketing budgets.
TSA Administrator John Pistole was set to meet with Hernandez’s family Saturday afternoon. Fellow screeners and law enforcement officials wore black mourning bands in Hernandez’s memory.
Thousands of fliers across the U.S. had been delayed after the shooting closed parts of the airport. The prolonged shutdown at the nation’s third-largest airport was particularly troublesome for those hoping to head to the East Coast or across the Pacific Ocean.
About 1,550 flights with 167,000 passengers were affected, airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said in a statement Saturday.
