Dolby has officially confirmed that upcoming Atmos titles will include Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Rio 2, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and X-Men: Days of Future Past; and Warner Bros. releases 300: Rise of an Empire and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey received an Atmos mix a year ago).
The latest announced Dolby Atmos titles also include Disney’s Frozen; DreamWorks Animation’s Mr. Peabody and Sherman; and I, Frankenstein from Lionsgate.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be mixed by Academy Award-winning trio Christopher Boyes, Michael Hedges and Michael Semanick (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) at Jackson’s Park Road Post Production.
300: Rise of an Empire, directed by award-winning director Noam Murro, will be mixed by two-time Academy Award-winning re-recording sound mixer Chris Jenkins, Academy Award-nominated re-recording mixer Dean A. Zupancic with support from Michael Keller (FX) and Ryan Murphy (mix technician). The mix will be conducted at Warner Bros. Pictures’ Dolby Atmos-equipped stage 10.
The Dolby Atmos version of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty will be mixed by Oscar-nominated re-recording sound mixer Skip Lievsay (dialogue and music). Craig Henighan will be collaborating on the mix (FX) and will conduct the sound design. Henighan and Paul Urmson will be co-supervising sound editors. The work will be conducted at the Zanuck Theater on the Fox lot and Warner Bros.’ stage 6.
Rio 2’s Dolby Atmos version will be mixed by Oscar-winning re-recording sound mixer Randy Thom (FX), who will also lead sound design. Thom will be accompanied by Academy Award-winning re-recording sound mixer Lora Hirschberg (dialogue and music) at Skywalker Sound’s Mix A Stage. Academy Award-nominated Gwen Whittle will be the supervising sound editor.
The Atmos mix for X-Men: Days of Future Past will be handled by Oscar-winning re-recording sound mixer Doug Hemphill (FX) and Oscar-nominated re-recording sound mixer Ron Bartlett (dialogue and music) at the John Ford Stage on the Fox lot. Academy Award-nominated Craig Berkey and John Larsen will be co-supervising sound editors. Berkey and Chuck Michael will conduct the sound design.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will get an Atmos mix from Academy Award-winning re-recording sound mixer Andy Nelson (dialogue and music) and re-recording sound mixer Will Files (FX) on the Fox lot at the newly equipped Howard Hawks Stage. John Larsen, Douglas Murray, and Files will collaborate on supervising sound editing and sound design.
Since the launch of Atmos in the spring of 2012, roughly 85 titles have been mixed in or planned for the format.
