IFC Films has picked up U.S. distribution rights to Arnaud Desplechin’s drama Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Worldview Entertainment sold the film, which stars Benicio Del Toro as Jimmy Picard, a Blackfoot Indian who fought in World War II and suffered from psychological distress. Mathieu Amalric plays Georges Devereau, an anthropologist who is brought in to assess Picard’s Indian psyche and behavior.
IFC is looking toward releasing the film in early 2014.
REVIEW: Jimmy P., Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian
Desplechin co-wrote the screenplay with Kent Jones and Julie Peyr, based on the book Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian by Georges Devereux.
Pascal Caucheteux and Jennifer Roth produced while Worldview’s Christopher Woodrow and Molly Conners executive produced with Patrick Milling Smith and Ben Limberg .
When the film premiered at Cannes in May, THR‘s Deborah Young wrote in her review: “The whole project is saved largely thanks to the subtext of ethnic discrimination that runs through the film, and two riveting central performances, which overcome a wobbly start to find emotional balance by the final reel.”
The deal was negotiated by Arianna Bocco, svp acquisitions, on behalf of IFC Films, and CAA on behalf of Worldview.
