BUENOS AIRES – The 28th Mar del Plata International Film Festival unveiled part of its program today, in a press release that announced Latin American premieres of Philipe Garrel’s Jealousy, Shion Sono’s Why Don’t You Play in Hell, Xavier Dolan’s Tom at the Farm, Johnnie To’s Blind Detective, Andrzej Wajda’s Walesa – Man of Hope, and Hitoshi Matsumoto’s R100.
The fest’s Auteurs section will feature the latest from Frederick Wiseman (At Berkeley), Ettore Scola (Che strano chiamarsi Federico!: Scola racconta Fellini), Alain Guiraudie (Stranger by the Lake), and Claire Denis (Bastards)
Once again the festival will have a strong presence of Asian cinema: apart from Sono, Matsumoto, and To, the festival will screen films by Jia Zhangke (A Touch of Sin), Kim Ki-duk (Moebius), and Hong Sang-Soo (Our Sunhi), among others. Last year, a delegation of top officials from the Korean Film Institute (KOFIC) attended the 27th Mar del Plata fest and signed a joint promotion deal with local institute INCAA.
The press release also revealed some of the retrospective programs of this edition. Alfred Hitchcock’s silent films The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog, The Ring and Blackmail will be screened in new prints. Some of Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini’s finest films will also be part of a retrospective featuring restored prints: Roma, Open City, Paisan, Germany Year Zero, Amore, Stromboli, India, and Voyage to Italy. Spanish helmer Juan Antonio Bardem’s program will include Death of a Ciclyst, Seven Days in January, and Nothing Ever Happens.
The Mar del Plata International Film Festival runs Nov. 16–24.
