Linda Bloodworth-Thomason‘s Bridegroom and Bruno Barreto‘s Reaching for the Moon were honored with audience awards by Outfest Los Angeles, organizers announced Sunday.
Bridegroom was honored with outstanding documentary feature award while Reaching for the Moon claimed the prize for dramatic feature film.
Moon tells of the love affair between American poet Elizabeth Bishop and Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares. Bridegroom, which also won an audience award at the Tribeca Film Festival, is the story of a young gay man, Shane Bitney Crone, whose relationship with his partner, Tom Bridegroom, was cut short when Bridegroom died in a freak accident — and Bridegroom’s family then refused to acknowledge the relationship.
Heading the list of jury award winners was Chris Mason Johnson‘s Test, set in the early years of the AIDS epidemic, which was named outstanding U.S. dramatic feature and earned Johnson the outstanding screenwriting award as well. Shaun Kadlec and Deb Tullman‘s Born This Way, about LGBT leaders in Cameroon, where homosexuality is punishable by a five-year prison sentence, won the outstanding documentary feature film.
The event, held from July 11-21, awarded winners in multiple categories. The festival, which promotes LGBT stories, opened with a screening of writer-director Kyle Patrick Alvarez‘s C.O.G. and will conclude with Darren Stein’s G.B.F.
