SAN FRANCISCO-

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will be closed through Labor Day weekend, Caltrans said Thursday.

The closure will be to take the East Span out of service, so crews can open the new East Span. Workers will put up a barrier rail and pave the road.

Along the West Span, crews will replace lights, clean and paint the cable and repair finger joints.

The closure will begin at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28. The bridge will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Drivers are asked to pick a different route now and plan ahead for the closure. Caltrans says public preparedness helped similar closures in 2006, 2007 and 2009 go by without any real problems.
