CANNES — A little Northern light will shine at this year’s Marrakech International Film Festival, with a tribute to Scandinavian cinema on Dec. 4.
The North African festival — attracting an international roster of stars, such as this year’s jury president Martin Scorcese — is looking to strengthen its ties with the region, which has traditionally had a strong presence at the festival. In 2012, Danish director Tobias Lindholm’s A Hijacking took home the jury prize and the best actor award for star Soren Malling.
STORY: Martin Scorsese Named President of Marrakech Film Fest Jury
Established in 2001, the festival somewhat focuses on the francophone world but draws a diverse slate of influential international stars — Leonardo DiCaprio, John Malkovich, Keanu Reeves, Gael Garcia Bernal and Jessica Chastain have all made stops there in recent years — and is chaired by HRH Prince Moulay Rachid of Morocco.
The festival shows about 120 films during the weeklong event and runs from Nov. 29 to Dec. 7.
