Scott Rudin is coming on board to produce DreamWorks’ long-in-the-works drama The Trial of the Chicago 7.
The project, after years of development that saw Steven Spielberg and Ben Stiller circle as directors, is finally getting traction, with Paul Greengrass now in final negotiations to direct the Aaron Sorkin-penned script.

The project’s original producers, Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, will still be involved.
Chicago 7 chronicles the trial of seven people who were charged with conspiracy and inciting to riot during the Chicago protests that occurred at the time of 1968 Democratic National Convention. The clash between the police and demonstrators and the subsequent trial went on to become a defining moment of the ’60s.
Rudin’s boarding highlights a growing working relationship with Greengrass. Rudin is a producer on Greengrass’ upcoming Tom Hanks-starring drama Captain Phillips, and is producing the Martin Luther King biopic Memphis, which Greengrass is attached to direct. He also works closely with Sorkin as a producer on his Steve Jobs biopic, still in development at Columbia, and as an executive producer on HBO’s The Newsroom.
Rudin recently wrapped production on Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and is prepping Cameron Crowe’s untitled project.
