Homeland Security Napolitano Remarks on Immigration
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano delivers remarks on Immigration enforcement at American University

SAN FRANCISCO –

Less than a week after stepping down as Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano has been named the 20th president of the University of California system.

The UC Board of Regents approved the nomination Thursday afternoon, after discussion and public comment, which resulted in a handful of people being removed from the meeting.

Napolitano will be the first female president in UC’s history, and will be bringing in a base salary of $570,000. That is actually about $21,000 less than what Mark Yudof was making, her predecessor. Her compensation will also include moving expenses of more than $140,000 and a car allowance of almost $9,000.

Before becoming the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Napolitano served two terms as Governor of Arizona, and as U.S. Attorney of Arizona.

She attended Santa Clara University, and was the school’s first female valedictorian.

As president of the University of California system, she will oversee more than 234,000 students, and an operating budget of more than $24 billion.
