STANISLAUS COUNTY-

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies say a chase that started in Modesto ending in Oakdale after a suspected car thief was shot by a homeowner.

Police in Modesto spotted a car that had been reported stolen early Wednesday morning. Officers say the car led them on a short chase. According to police, officers had to abandon the chase due to a concern for public safety.

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s say the car was found, stuck and abandoned, near the Oakdale-Waterford Highway.

A short time later, deputies got a report of a man breaking into a home nearby. Deputies say the homeowners armed themselves and got the man, believed to be the suspected car thief, to leave.

After being gone for some time, investigators say the man forced his way back into the home but was shot by the homeowner. The man is said to be in the hospital in stable condition.
