Journalism’s loss will be the art world’s gain.

Columbia University journalism professor Sree Sreenivasan is heading to other side of Central Park by joining the Metropolitan Museum of Art as its first chief digital officer. The New York museum made the announcement on Thursday, saying that Sreenivasan will start his new job Aug. 12.

In his new role, Sreenivasan will explore new digital opportunities for the country’s largest art museum. He will lead the Met’s digital media department, which is responsible for managing and producing content online and in the museum’s galleries.

“Sree,” as he is known among his students, teaches digital journalism at Columbia, where he has been a faculty member since 1993, and recently served as the dean of student affairs. On Twitter, Sreenivasan wrote on Thursday: “So excited to join @MetMuseum, but so sad to leave @Columbia, my home for 21 yrs. Both such classy places.”

Sreenivasan has been a tireless proselytizer of online journalism for many years, speaking at colleges and newspapers (including The Times). His teachings are widely influential through his SreeTips blog and his site sree.net.

In a statement released by the Met, Sreenivasan said that “until now, I’ve had a one-way, three-decade-long love affair with the Met so I am absolutely delighted to have this opportunity to contribute as part of the staff and as the leader of the digital media team there.”
