Magnolia Pictures has picked up the U.S. rights to How I Live Now, a sci-fi teen love drama starring Saoirse Ronan.
Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) directed the movie, which adapts the novel by Meg Rosoff and is set in the U.K. in the near-future.
Ronan plays an American teen named Daisy who is sent to live with her aunt and cousins on a remote farm in England. When the aunt gets stuck in Norway and England is invaded by an unnamed force, Daisy and her cousins are left to live in an almost utopian setting, unencumbered by adults.
That changes when soldiers come to the farm, splitting up the teens, and Daisy must deal with the travails and horrors of occupation while keeping one of her cousins alive as she tries to reunite them all.
The book was published in 2006 to great acclaim and won the Guardian children’s fiction prize.
The film was produced by Charles Steel, Alasdair Flind, Andrew Ruhemann and John Battsek.
Magnolia’s arm Magnet Releasing is planning a fall theatrical release.
Protagonist Pictures is handling international sales.
