SEOUL — According to data released Dec. 17 by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), theater admissions in South Korea crossed 200 million, setting a new record for local cinema.
Last year, local admissions reached about 195 million for the first time, and the number was expected to exceed 200 million in 2013.
This can be attributed to how ten movies brought in over 5 million admissions. Miracle in Cell No. 7 raked in 12.8 million admissions, while Snowpiercer and The Face Reader both drew in more than 9 million.

Seven titles crossed the 5 million-mark: Iron Man 3 (9 million), The Berlin File (7.16 million), Secretly Greatly (6.95 million), Hide and Seek (5.6 million), The Terror Live (5.58 million), Cold Eyes (5.51 million) and World War Z (5.24 million).
Homespun films dominated box office shares, accounting for eight of the mentioned top 10 grossing films. Of this year’s 200 million admissions, 118 million were for Korean films. Last year, 114.6 million out of a total 195 million were for local titles.
Admissions for year-end will likely continue growing full speed, with the release of more anticipated Korean films this month such as The Attorney starring Song Kang-ho (Snowpiercer, The Face Reader), on Dec. 19, and The Suspect starring popular actor Gong Yu, on Dec. 24.
