Chinese hackers have been doing their cyber espionage thing for quite a while. In fact, back in 2008, hackers from China hacked two huge whales: the Presidential campaigns of both Barack Obama and John McCain. The hackers managed to steal internal documents from both Obama and McCain.
NBC News reports that Chinese hackers wanted to export âmassive amounts of internal data from both campaignsâincluding internal position papers and private emails of key advisers in both camps.â How did this happen?
It was a straightforward phishing hack. An e-mail was sent to top staffers from both camps detailing the âagendaâ for an upcoming meeting. But along with the âagendaâ, the e-mail attachment also had very sophisticated malware that installed itself onto the staffersâ computers. The malware replicated itself through the Obama campaignâs computer system and was designed âto stay buried in the computers for months, if not years.â
Alan Brill, the senior managing director of Kroll Solutions, described the malware that Chinese hackers used to NBC News âas sophisticated as anything we had seenâ and called the constant battle with the Chinese hackers as a âfirefightâ.
The hacking of the 2008 presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain by China is being revealed to the public right before the two-day meeting with President Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The hackings, which China has denied in the past, are sure to be a hot topic between the two world leaders. [NBC News]
