Apparently there are exceptions to the Obama administration’s pledge to eliminate official White House movie screenings.
Officials announced Monday that the president would host the cast and crew of George Clooney‘s Monuments Men in the East Wing theater Tuesday evening. Maybe it’s because President Obama is friends with Clooney, who co-hosted a $15 million fundraiser for the president’s reelection campaign. Or perhaps it’s because Clooney’s film is not in the running for an Oscar.

The film is the first official movie screening since the White House declared a moratorium in November, saying the president was becoming a pawn in the Oscar race. Since the Lincoln screening last awards season, ambitious film marketers have inundated the White House with requests for splashy screenings. The cast and crew of 12 Years a Slave were especially upset that the White House did not give them an official screening.
The Monuments Men showing is expected to be low-key, with no press allowed. No word on whether cast member Matt Damon, who was sharply critical of Obama during the last election, would attend.
