TORONTO — As Canada drives toward cable unbundling, Shaw Communications president Peter Bissonnette has postponed his previously announced retirement to December 2015.
The new management structure for the western Canadian cable giant also sees Jay Mehr promoted to executive vp and COO, overseeing Shaw Communications’ cable, satellite and business operations.

The move comes as the ruling Conservatives force the CRTC, the country’s TV watchdog, to mandate cable unbundling to encourage consumer choice and savings.
Calgary-based Shaw Communications is also refocusing its core cable TV, Internet access and satellite TV businesses as Netflix Canada continues to sign up subscribers here and western Canadian phone giant Telus Corp. claws market share from Shaw with its Optik IP-based TV and high-speed Internet service.
Other management changes include Paul Robertson promoted to executive vp and president of Shaw Media, while Steve Wilson has been named CFO and executive vp of corporate development.
It’s the biggest management shake-up at Shaw Communications since November 2010, when Brad Shaw replaced brother Jim Shaw Jr. as CEO of the Shaw family-controlled media giant.
