In BC, more than 100 pieces of anti-Chinese legislation was introduced in the 1800s and 1900s. Many restricted employment, ownership of property and running for public office.

Thousands of Chinese laborers came to Canada to build the Canadian Pacific Railroad in the mid-19th century. But once the project was complete, efforts were made to rid Canada of the Chinese.

Now the process is underway to come up with a formal apology for the past injustices.

“All British Columbians need to be a part of this important process if it is to have the currency it needs to be truly meaningful.” said Teresa Wat, Minister of International Trade and Minister Responsible for the Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism.

You can read more about this process in the OK Falls Review.
