Matt Damon plays a war buddy of George Clooney‘s in The Monuments Men, so it’s fitting the actor has been drafted in the prank war Clooney is waging against Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
Fey and Poehler fired the first shot while hosting the Golden Globes, where they poked fun at Clooney. Fey described Gravity as “the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.”

Clooney vowed revenge, and on Wednesday’s Late Show, Damon revealed he was an unwilling participant. The actor told David Letterman that last week he received two gigantic fruit baskets from Poehler and Fey, with two letters attached. The first was an apology letter, saying the hosts did not mean to hurt his feelings at the Globes. (They jokingly referred to him as a “garbage man” during the telecast.)
The second letter wasn’t so friendly. Damon read it aloud:
“If your note is part of some George Clooney prank, as I very strongly suspect it is, you A-list amateurs are going to have to step it the f— up. We are not some easily confused starlets here. We are grown-ass, professional comedians. Please accept this fruit as a token of our sincerity. Best wishes, Elizabeth Tina Fey, Amy ‘Boston’ Poehler.”

After getting the note, Damon realized Clooney must have sent the women a “wounded letter” on stationery with his name on it.
“I have no idea how many letters are out there, to how many people,” Damon said.
Also on Wednesday, Clooney revealed his side of the prank during a SiriusXM Town Hall event with the Monuments Men cast: “I sent her a letter saying, Dear Tina, listen, it’s from Matt, and it just says, ‘Look, it sounds hypocritical because I laughed at the jokes about George and Leo, but you know, that’s sort of what people think about them. But when you called me a garbage man, it just seemed like low hanging fruit, it just seemed like an easy joke. And you know, I don’t want an apology, I don’t want anything else, I just want you to know that my kid now calls me the garbage man.'”
Clooney also vowed that the letter was only the first step in his revenge.
Damon, meanwhile, is poised to make a return to Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday. Last year, he hijacked the ABC show after years of having a fake public feud with Jimmy Kimmel.
