TV writer and journalist Caroline Kepnes has signed a two-book deal with Atria imprint Emily Bestler Books.
You, the first book, is touted as a “terrifying, insightful and darkly humorous story” about a man named Joe’s obsession with a woman, how he stalks her on the internet and in real life to the point of learning how to make her fall in love with him. The novel is pitched as a “gripping, page-turn[er] … about passion, voyeurism and possession” and Joe as “the ultimate antihero for today’s hyperconnected digital age.” Publication is scheduled for September.
“Caroline’s novel is hands down one of the scariest, most riveting studies of a depraved psychology I have ever read,” said editor Emily Bestler in a statement. “Caroline’s voice is captivating and unbelievably addictive.”
Kepnes was represented by WME’s Jennifer Rudolph Walsh and Claudia Ballard, and Josh Bank, Sara Shandler and Lanie Davis of Alloy Entertainment, which has shepherded more than 75 bestsellers to market, including the Pretty Little Liars, Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl book series. You is part of Alloy’s strategy to add a small adult list to its successful YA offerings.
Foreign rights have been pre-sold in nine territories, including the U.K. and France, with more expected to be added shortly.
Keppnes’ TV credits include The Secret Life of the American Teenager and 7th Heaven. She’s also written for Entertainment Weekly and published several short stories.
Details of the second book were not released.
