While it readies X-Men: Days of Future Past for a May 23, 2014 opening, 20th Century Fox is already working on the next installment of the X-Men franchise.
Fox has announced X-Men: Apocalypse as the title of the new film and has planted a flag on May 27, 2016, for its release.
Director Bryan Singer, who helms the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, tweeted on Thursday:
“#Xmen #Apocalypse 2016!”

While the studio was light on details, it’s expected that Singer, Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner will return to produce. It’s unclear at this time if Singer will return as director.
Apocalypse is the name of one of Marvel’s and the X-Men’s bigger villains. The character, an immortal mutant, made his first appearance in a 1986 issue of X-Factor and was co-created by Louise Simonson, Jackson Guice and Walter Simonson.
One of the character’s main storylines occurred in a publishing event in the mid-1990s titled Age of Apocalypse. The story involved time travel and the establishment of a timeline when Apocalypse rules a world where mutants have subjugated humankind.
It could dovetail nicely with Days of Future Past, which also explores two or more timelines. Fox did not provide details.
The announcement of the release date puts Apocalypse on a collision course with Disney’s sequel to Alice in Wonderland.
