Directed by Diao Yinan, who directed Uniform and Night Train, the movie features mainland Chinese actor Liao Fan and Taiwanese actress Gwei Lunmei, and tells of a former detective who falls in love during a murder investigation with a woman who is linked to the victims.
The movie is produced by Vivian Qu and Wan Juan, and co-produced by Shen Yang and Zhang Dajun. The movie will receive its world premiere in competition at the Berlinale Palast on Feb. 12.
“We have long admired the work of the incredibly talented and progressive Diao Yinan, and with this new film, he has taken on a genre and themes rarely seen in contemporary Chinese cinema,” said Fortissimo chairman Werner. “With its great cast, style and feel, Black Coal, Thin Ice is a film that will grab the attention of audiences around the globe.”
The deal was brokered by Werner and Executive VP sales & acquisitions, Winnie Lau, together with Wan and Shen.
Diao’s previous movie was Night Train, which premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section.
