BERLIN – Austria, winner of this year’s best foreign language film Academy Award, for Michael Haneke‘s Amour, has chosen literary adaptation The Wall as its submission for this year’s Oscars.
The drama, from director Julian Roman Polsler stars Martina Gedeck (The Lives of Others) in a nearly wordless performance as a woman suddenly cut off from the rest of the world by an invisible wall.
The Austria-Germany co-production between Coop99 Film and Starhaus Filmproduktion was hailed by critics after its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival.
“Polsler has achieved an exemplary literary adaptation: touching, emotional and visually powerful,” the nine-member jury of Austrian film professionals that selected the film said in a statement. “Based on Marlen Haushofer‘s cult novel, (the film) is equal parts feminist Robinson Crusoe and sinister science fiction parable. A minimalistic but powerful film about powerlessness.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will pick the nominees for best foreign language film in January. The 86th Oscars take place on March 2, 2014.
