Fox’s John Mulaney comedy series is welcoming back a few more members of its original pilot family.
Saturday Night Live‘s Nasim Pedrad, Elliott Gould, Seaton Smith and Zack Pearlman have boarded the comedy based on the stand-up comedian’s life, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Gould, Pedrad and Smith all were featured in the original pilot, which was developed at NBC last season. Fox picked up the multicamera comedy straight to series in October.
STORY: John Mulaney Comedy Lands Series Order at Fox
The ensemble comedy was created, written by and stars stand-up comedian Mulaney (a writer on SNL). Pedrad, who currently ranks as SNL‘s longest-running tenured female cast member after the departures of Kristen Wiig and Abby Elliott, will play Jane, one of John’s roommates and a personal trainer fixated on fairness and justice in her life — particularly her romantic life. She played a grade school teacher in the NBC pilot who was addicted to procrastinating.
Gould will play Oscar, Mulaney’s colorful and boisterous neighbor. He’s a 71-year-old gay veteran of New York and has seen and done everything — and he’s over it. He played a similar role in NBC’s incarnation.
Smith will play Motif, an experienced comedian and ladies’ man whom Mulaney often tries to emulate but never quite succeeds. He’s also one of John and Jane’s roommates.
Pearlman (Community) will portray Andre Van Horn, a stubborn but energetic 29-year-old trust fund baby. He lives off a small amount of old family money but does everything grandly, including the way he speaks, lives and drinks.
The quartet join the previously cast Martin Short, who will reprise his role in the original pilot as Lou Cannon, Mulaney’s over-the-top boss who was a major stand-up comedian in the 1980s and ’90s and now hosts a game show.
An episode count for the comedy has not yet been announced. Mulaney created and penned the series and will exec produce the Universal Television comedy alongside SNL mastermind Lorne Michaels. 3 Arts’ Dave Becky (Louie) and Andrew Singer (Portlandia) are also on board as EPs. Andy Ackerman (The New Adventures of Old Christine, Seinfeld) directed the pilot.
As of press time, sources tell THR that SNL and Mulaney’s respective production schedules do not conflict, so Pedrad will be able to maintain her presence on the NBC sketch series, which is also produced by Michaels.
Pedrad is repped by CAA, Gould is with APA, Smith is with ICM Partners and Pearlman is with ICM Partners and Principato Young.
