Warcraft, based on Blizzard Entertainment’s fantasy video game franchise, will roll out in theaters Dec. 18, 2015, looking to take advantage of the year-end holidays.
Warcraft will mark the first film to be released under Universal’s production and co-financing partnership with Thomas Tull‘s Legendary Pictures. Legendary was previously based at Warner Bros., where it co-financed a raft of films including Christopher Nolan‘s Batman franchise.

The first game in the Warcraft canon, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, was released in 1994. Sequels followed in 1995 and 2002. The initial trilogy were all real-time strategy games, a genre where players amass resources to build and deploy forces across a map in an attempt to control territory and destroy rival armies. Then, in 2004, Blizzard released World of Warcraft, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in the same universe. Currently, WoW boast over 7 million active users, making it the most popular game of its type in the world.
Duncan Jones will direct the adaptation from a script he co-wrote with Charles Leavitt.
