TORONTO – Mongrel Media has acquired the Canadian rights to roughly 300 films from StudioCanal.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Toronto-based Mongrel will handle the Canadian broadcast, DVD, VOD, SVOD and electronic distribution for a StudioCanal bounty that includes Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead 2, Roger Spottiswoode’s Air America, starring Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr., and Alan Parker’s Angel Heart.
The StudioCanal library, distributed in the U.S. by Lionsgate, was previously handled in Canada by Entertainment One and Alliance Films.
Other StudioCanal collection titles headed to Mongrel include the Rambo franchise, Paul Verhoeven’s Basic Instinct, Richard Attenborough’s Chaplin, Renny Harlin’s Cutthroat Island, starring Geena Davis and Matthew Modine, and Oliver Stone’s The Doors.
On the foreign language side, the StudioCanal line-up also includes the Swedish hit The Hundred Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out A Window and Disappeared, which has already earned more than $11 million in its first two weeks of local release.
The deal brings Mongrel Media’s catalog to around 1,500 film titles.
“StudioCanal has one of the most prestigious libraries of films and we are ?honored to have been entrusted these titles for Canada,” said Mongrel Media president Hussain Amarshi in a statement.
