SACRAMENTO-

Police say two people led officers on a chase on a “lengthy pursuit” Friday afternoon through Sacramento.

According to Sacramento Police Department spokesperson Officer Doug Morse, officers tried to stop a car near West El Camino Avenue and Interstate 5 after a CHP helicopter spotted it. The car had been reported stolen

Police chased the car until they stopped at Vernon Road and Garden Highway.

The driver, later identified as 24-year-old Esteban Araujo, jumped into the Sacramento River to try to get away from police, officers say.

The other person in the car, 27-year-old Angelica Lopez, was also taken into custody. She was booked on charges of possession of stolen property.

Araujo is charged with possession of stolen property, vehicle theft, evading police and being an ex-felon in possession of ammunition.
