CHPSACRAMENTO-

A veteran California Highway Patrol officer and his wife, a CHP dispatcher, were arrested Friday on suspicion of workers’ compensation insurance fraud.

Officer Daniel Clapp filed a worker’s comp claim after he said he was hurt in a Dec. 27, 2011 fight during an arrest. According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, both Clapp and his wife, Jolea, told a doctor that he couldn’t drive, do any heavy lifting and that pain kept him from performing his CHP duties.

CHP Internal Affairs kept an eye on Clapp, the DA said. Investigators reportedly watched Clapp cutting and carrying large loads of firewood. Jolea Clapp would drive for her husband while in his local CHP jurisdiction and then switch seats once outside, according to investigators.

The Clapps are charged with conspiracy to make false statements in support of a workers’ compensation insurance claim and making false statements about the true extent of his injuries. Daniel Clapp is also accused of perjury.

Both face up to a $150,000 fine and five years in state prison.
