Lady Gaga had some wise words for the boys of One Direction during Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards backstage after they received an award for Song of the Summer for their single “Best Song Ever.”
When group members Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson accepted the Moonman for the fan-voted award, 1D received applause as well as several loud boos thrown in the mix from the upset crowd. The category included nominations for Miley Cyrus‘ “We Can’t Stop,” Selena Gomez‘s “Come & Get It,” Calvin Harris featuring Ellie Goulding‘s “I Need Your Love,” Daft Punk featuring Pharrell‘s “Get Lucky” and Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell’s “Blurred Lines.”

After 1D accepted their award, the boys went backstage to thank their fans in a quick interview — only to be joined by the one and only Mother Monster.
“If I did hear what I heard out there, I just want to tell you that you deserve every bit of success that you have,” Lady Gaga told the group. “Don’t you dare let those people boo you.”
The “Applause” singer also added, “I want to leave right now. I don’t even want to stay because I don’t want to be in a room like that.”
