There are new calls for a federal hate crime investigation after a Manteca mosque was vandalized.

“We found some vulgarities spray painted on the sign, the ‘F-word,’ followed by Islam on the sign and on the ground,” Imam Mohammad Elfarra said.

Poisonous words scrawled on a place meant for prayer, and that’s not all that was discovered last Tuesday morning at the Islamic Center of Manteca.

“There were strips of raw bacon thrown on the property,” he said.

That movie was injury on top of written insult for a faith community that doesn’t touch, cook or eat pork because members believe it is unclean.

“Definitely we look at it as a hate crime,” the Imam said.

“Some folks are scared, especially ones with children that take their children there on a regular basis,” Basim Elkarra, of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said.

CAIR has now asked the FBI to investigate this, the second incident at this mosque in three months.

“In November (it said) no Allah, just God, along those lines. And then this time, the ‘F-word’ and then Islam. Twice,” Elkarra said.

The mosque is outfitted with surveillance cameras but the November vandals were never caught.

Imam Elfarra prays anyone with questions about his religion would think to ask a question instead of scribbling an insult.

“All I would like to happen is for the person who did this to know now, if you really come to know the religion of Islam, you’d know that there’s a peace and a truth to it that you’re not getting or you’re not seeing yet. So, let us tell you that,” Elfarra said. “Let us clarify that. Make sure you know the truth before you judge it.”

To that end, he’s  inviting the community in for an open house this Sunday afternoon.
