I trust that they won't charge me...but I also would never give someone my credit card information if it's not being used to execute a transaction. If Google Play wants to provide a promotional free download, it should just provide a promo/gift card code that enables you to bypass the credit card entry stage. YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR FINANCIAL INFORMATION UNLESS IT IS TO EXECUTE A TRANSACTION. And even then, on the internet you should always proceed with caution. Google should know better and should be encouraging safe behavior on the web. Lead by example, right?

I have not at ANY time given Google Play or Google Wallet any of my financial information, and I'm not going to start now. You may trust Google to treat your CC info in a secure manner, but I don't. I may be paranoid but at least I'm not gullible. If you want to hand out your financial information to any Tom, Dick, or Harry, more fool you. They are trying to con you with the "1-click shopping" shtick. They know that once they have your CC on file they can trick you into spending money with them. I leave you with a comment from Bugs Bunny: "Wadda maroon!"

Granted...Google is a lousy ebook company. They seldom if ever address complaints. They even canceled their Reader app recently. That said. Amazon always runs you through their check out for ALL books...free or not. This is also the same for Apple and any other ebook service I'm aware of. My main objection is however that under the "How to Read" tab you're supposed to be able to download as an epub or pdf but this fails miserably when you go to do that. Plus there is no way to contact the Author for help in this matter. Further more Google doesn't even list Kindle as a possible ebook reader. Really? What a joke. This "They don't exist because I don't want them to attitude is exactly the blueprint Microsoft has adapted towards Google. Guess what Google...your users aren't that stupid. This is why I typically never use Google for purchasing books. ...Free or Not.
