The Real, after a successful test run this summer, has been picked up by the Fox-owned TV stations and will launch in September 2014 in national syndication and in a second window on the BET cable network, it was announced Thursday.
The one-hour daily talk show from Warner Bros., hosted by Tamar Braxton, Loni Love, Adrienne Bailon, Jeannie Mai and Tamera Mowry-Housley, and executive produced by SallyAnn Salsano, had a seven market test this summer on Fox stations in New York (WNYW), Los Angeles (KTTV), Washington D.C. (WTTG), Philadelphia (WTXF), Phoenix (KSAZ), Houston (KRIV) and Tampa (WTVT).
It attracted a young audience that grew over the four weeks of the test. It also is notable because of the diversity of the hosts.
“This summer, the daytime landscape in seven Fox markets was dramatically altered when the women of The Real exploded on to the air,” said Ken Werner, president, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. “The Real brought viewers a unique combination of elements that were missing from daytime: a real, multi-cultural conversation about issues that women of all ages are talking about. Daytime viewers from across the nation tuned in everyday to share in the fun, authentic, energetic and wonderfully outrageous hour that is The Real experience. We are very excited to be bring this distinctive unique series to stations for the Fall of 14.”
“Five hosts for the price of one — score! Seriously, we’re all looking for younger adults and this program delivered big time,” said Frank Cicha, senior vp programming at Fox Television Stations. “This skew suggests daypart flexibility, which opens up lots of interesting scheduling opportunities, especially in our duopolies. Should be fun.”
“These five hosts have amazing chemistry and they will again bring their outspoken and direct points of view to the audience at home come Fall ’14,” said Mike Darnell, president, Warner Bros. unscripted and alternative television.
“It is a fun and exciting show that our audience will enjoy and a perfect complement to our programming slate,” said Loretha Jones, president of original programming at BET Networks.
The Real will debut on 18 Fox-owned stations, including, New York (WNYW), Los Angeles (KTTV), Chicago (WFLD), Philadelphia (WTXF), Dallas (KDFW), Boston (WFXT), Atlanta (WAGA), D.C. (WTTG), Houston (KRIV), Detroit (WJBK), Phoenix (KSAZ), Tampa (WTVT), Minneapolis (KMSP), Orlando (WOFL), Charlotte (WJXY), Memphis (WHBQ), Austin (KTBC) and Gainesville (WOGX).
